Train passengers may soon be able to get travel insurance even when they buy their tickets directly from railway station counters. For just 45 paise per passenger, eligible passengers can choose insurance cover of up to ₹10 lakh.
Until now, this optional insurance facility was mainly available to passengers booking tickets online. Extending it to railway counters will make it easier for more people to get this protection.
How Does the Insurance Work?
Passengers booking eligible reserved train tickets at railway counters can choose this insurance facility.
The premium is just 45 paise per passenger. The maximum insurance cover is ₹10 lakh, but passengers should remember that this amount is not paid in every case.
The money paid depends on the type of accident or incident and the rules of the insurance policy.
Is the Insurance Compulsory?
No. The insurance is completely optional. Passengers can decide whether they want to take it while booking their tickets.
Before choosing the insurance, passengers should check:
- Which accidents and incidents are covered.
- How much money can be paid in different cases.
- What documents are needed to make a claim.
- What conditions are mentioned in the policy.
Insurance Cannot Replace Railway Safety
Travel insurance can provide financial help to passengers or their families after a covered accident. But it cannot stop accidents from happening.
Railways also need to focus on better coaches, strong materials, regular checks and timely repairs.
Old coaches must also be properly maintained. Damaged parts should be replaced, and safety rules must be followed.
What Should Passengers Remember?
The 45-paise insurance option can offer useful financial support at a very low cost. However, passengers should read the policy conditions carefully before buying it.
The main goal should always be to make train journeys safer through better maintenance and strong safety measures.
