New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that India’s investment in clean energy has helped the country deal with global problems while keeping its economy growing.
Speaking at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026 in New Delhi on Monday, Modi said India plans to add another 500 GW of clean energy capacity over the next 10 to 11 years.
He said that solar, wind and other clean energy sources can reduce India’s dependence on traditional fuels like coal and oil.
India Achieves Major Clean Energy Targets
Modi said India has already made strong progress in renewable energy. The country has crossed 50% of its total installed power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, reaching this target five years before the 2030 deadline.
India has also added nearly 300 GW towards its 500 GW clean energy target.
The Prime Minister said that investment in clean energy helped India face challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing West Asia crisis.
Solar Power Reaching More Homes and Farmers
Modi also spoke about the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which was launched to install rooftop solar panels in one crore homes.
He said more than 65 lakh households have joined the scheme. It has also helped families reduce their electricity bills.
Under the government’s solar programmes, more than 44,000 government buildings have started using solar power. The KUSUM scheme has also helped over 30 lakh farmers use solar energy for irrigation.
Government Plans More Investment in Green Energy
The government is also planning to invest around ₹2 lakh crore to improve electricity transmission lines and power networks.
This will help carry electricity from areas that produce more solar and wind power to places where it is needed.
Modi also encouraged farmers to use solar-powered machines for farming, harvesting and dairy work.
India Wants to Become a Global Clean Energy Leader
The Prime Minister said India is also working on green hydrogen and aims to produce 5 million tonnes of it by the end of this decade.
The four-day renewable energy summit, running until November 5, has participants from more than 130 countries.
The government is also targeting $220 billion in renewable energy investment by 2030.
Modi said clean energy is important not only for India but also for the world. He added that India wants to support other countries through funding, technology and knowledge.
