Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has agreed to reconsider Telangana’s request to increase the height of the Tummidihatti barrage on the Pranahita River, which flows along the Telangana–Maharashtra border.
The proposal was discussed during a meeting between Fadnavis and Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy in Mumbai on October 26, 2026.
Why Does Telangana Want a Higher Barrage?
Under a 2016 agreement, the barrage was planned to be 148 metres high. Telangana now wants to increase it to 152 metres to provide more water for farming in the former Adilabad district, where many people need better irrigation facilities.
What Did Maharashtra Say?
Fadnavis said Maharashtra was willing to help Telangana meet its water needs, provided the project did not harm Maharashtra or its people.
He suggested forming a joint committee of officials from both states to study the plan. The team will examine water availability, technical issues, environmental effects and possible damage to nearby land.
Farmers May Receive Compensation
Telangana Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy said the proposed height of 152 metres could make the project more useful and reduce the need for costly electricity to pump water.
Telangana has also offered to compensate Maharashtra farmers if their agricultural land is affected by rising water levels.
No final decision has been made yet. Both states will study the proposal before deciding whether the barrage height should be increased.
