50 Crore People Lifted Out of Extreme Poverty in India Over 10-12 Years: PM Modi

PM Modi Says Government Protected Farmers from Rising Fertiliser Prices

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that around 50 crore people in India have moved out of extreme poverty over the past 10 to 12 years, citing a recent World Bank report. He made the statement while inaugurating Pune Metro’s Pink Line through video conferencing.

Modi said that earlier, the fight against poverty was limited to slogans, but today the country is seeing changes on the ground. He also highlighted the growth of India’s metro network, which has expanded from 248 km before 2014 to around 1,200 km today.

The 23-km-long Pune Metro Pink Line will connect the Hinjewadi IT hub with the District Court Metro station. The project has been built at a cost of over ₹8,300 crore and is expected to make daily travel easier for thousands of IT professionals and reduce traffic congestion.

The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for four new metro corridors under Pune Metro Phase-II, involving an investment of around ₹21,800 crore.

Addressing the drought situation in Maharashtra, Modi assured farmers of full support from the Union Government. The state has declared 85 per cent of its area drought-affected and announced interim financial assistance of ₹5,000 for affected farmers ahead of Diwali.

Modi also appealed to people to include drought-affected farmers and their families in Diwali celebrations, saying that supporting them during difficult times is a shared social responsibility.
