New Delhi: The Supreme Court has said it will examine records related to the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) voter list revision process. However, it did not order the Commission to preserve its files and internal messages, as requested by the petitioners.
The case concerns claims that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar made important decisions about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists without the agreement of the other two election commissioners. The ECI has denied these claims.
What Did the Court Say?
On October 27, the court gave the petitioners time to respond to the ECI’s written reply. The next hearing is planned for November 17.
The judges said they would examine the records. The ECI has said that all three election commissioners agreed on the decisions related to the SIR process.
Dispute Over Voter Registration Form
The court also agreed to hear a new petition filed by Rajya Sabha MP Dola Sen. It raises questions about changes linked to Form 6, which people use to apply for voter registration.
The petitioners have also questioned a statement by the ECI about the court’s role in these changes. The court said it would examine the matter.
The ECI has denied changing the official Form 6. It said the additional declaration used during the SIR process was a separate document meant to help check applicants’ details against older voter lists.
What Happens Next?
The petitioners want the court to examine the Commission’s original files and messages to understand how the disputed decisions were made.
The Supreme Court has not given a final ruling on these claims. The case is expected to continue on November 17.
