Indian Armed Forces Sign MoU with Sarvam to Develop AI Technology

New Delhi: India’s armed forces have joined hands with Bengaluru-based company Sarvam to develop and use artificial intelligence (AI) for defence work.

The agreement was signed by the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS). It aims to help the Army, Navy and Air Force use AI for research, training, sharing information and making better decisions.

How Will AI Help the Armed Forces?

The partnership will focus on building safe AI systems using technology developed in India. These systems may help defence teams study information, understand risks and plan their work more effectively.

The armed forces also want to keep important data safe and make sure AI is used responsibly.

Why Is Homegrown AI Important?

AI is becoming an important tool in modern warfare. It can help military teams study information from cameras, sensors and other sources to understand what is happening on the ground.

India is also working to build its own AI technology so it does not have to depend too much on foreign companies.

Under the India AI Mission, launched in 2024 with a budget of ₹10,372 crore for five years, the government is supporting organisations working to develop AI models in India.

What Happens Next?

The partnership with Sarvam is expected to support the development of AI tools for India’s defence forces. Its main goal is to build secure technology that can meet the country’s needs.

However, the agreement does not mean that all three services are already using these new AI systems. Their development and use will depend on the work carried out under the partnership.
