Over 12,000 Indian Tech Workers Return from US Amid Visa and Job Fears

New Delhi: More Indian tech workers are returning home from the United States due to worries about visa rules and job cuts.

According to a report by The Economic Times, around 12,700 Indian tech professionals had returned to India by September 2026. The number may rise beyond last year’s total of 15,100.

Why Are They Coming Back?

Changes in US visa rules and fewer job opportunities are making some Indian workers rethink their future in America. Many are now looking for jobs in India, especially in fields like artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing and online security.

However, moving back can bring its own problems. Workers may need to manage tax rules in both countries and help their children adjust to a new school and lifestyle.

Green Card Delays Add to Worries

Reports also point to a pause in the PERM process at several major technology companies. PERM is an important step for many foreign workers who want a US green card through their employer.

Immigration experts say this pause does not automatically cancel valid H-1B visas or green cards that have already been approved. However, it may delay some applications for permanent residency.

For Indian tech workers, the coming months may bring important decisions about jobs, visas and their future in the US or India.
