Delhi traders have asked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to postpone the INDIA bloc rally planned for November 1. They fear the event could hurt their business during the Diwali shopping season.
The Federation of Sadar Bazar Trades Association has requested that the rally be held after November 10.
Why Are Traders Worried?
Traders say Delhi’s markets do business worth around ₹25,000 crore between Dhanteras and Diwali. They fear traffic jams, road closures and large crowds could keep customers away from shops.
They also say protests and traffic restrictions in recent months have already caused business losses.
Small Businesses Could Be Affected
Markets such as Sadar Bazar, Chandni Chowk, Khari Baoli and Chawri Bazar could face problems if traffic is disrupted.
Shopkeepers say the impact could also affect workers, helpers and delivery staff who depend on festive-season sales for their income.
The traders’ group has also contacted other political leaders, including Akhilesh Yadav and Mamata Banerjee, to seek support for delaying the rally.
The INDIA bloc plans to hold the rally to protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists.
