The Supreme Court has said that a fight between a husband and wife cannot, by itself, be a reason to end a pregnancy. The court made this remark while hearing a case involving a woman who wants to end her 25-week pregnancy.
The woman told the court that she was facing mental stress because of problems in her marriage. Her lawyer also said that her husband had threatened to end the marriage if she went ahead with the abortion. He was also accused of making allegations against her in a family WhatsApp group.
The court asked the husband to withdraw all allegations against his wife and apologise to her. It also said that both partners should try to settle their differences instead of allowing the dispute to grow further.
The judges noted that the unborn baby was healthy and there was no medical reason for ending the pregnancy. The court also said that the right to end a pregnancy must be considered under the law and that a personal dispute alone cannot decide the matter.
The Supreme Court has given the husband time to submit an affidavit withdrawing his allegations. The next hearing is scheduled for November 4.
