In a major political development in Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi has announced his resignation from the Lok Sabha and quit the National Conference (NC).
He made the announcement on Tuesday at a gathering in Budgam, where many of his supporters had come to show their support. The day also marked the 26th death anniversary of his father, Aga Mehdi.
Ruhullah’s differences with the party leadership had been growing for some time. He had openly questioned the Omar Abdullah government over promises made during the 2024 elections, especially on reservation, Article 370 and the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
His protest outside Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s residence had further increased tensions within the party. The situation became more difficult when he refused to campaign for the NC candidate in the Budgam Assembly by-election.
Ruhullah is not new to politics. He has represented Budgam as an MLA three times and won the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 elections.
NC president Farooq Abdullah had earlier asked him to resign as an MP, leave the party and contest elections independently. Now, with Ruhullah’s announcement, the political situation within the National Conference has taken a new turn.
However, NC leaders have maintained that his exit will not affect the party or the Omar Abdullah-led government.
