Supreme Court Says No One Can Occupy Public Protest Sites Forever

The Supreme Court has said that no person or organisation can occupy a public protest site forever. The court said everyone has an equal right to use public places to raise their concerns and hold peaceful protests.

The court made these remarks while hearing petitions related to the July protests in Delhi. The protests had led to traffic problems and affected nearby shops and businesses.

During the hearing, the judges said that protests should be allowed for a fixed period. They also pointed out that shopkeepers, workers, farmers and other groups have the same right to use public spaces.

The court said there must be a balance between the right to protest peacefully and the right of people to run their businesses and earn a living.

The Supreme Court is also looking into complaints about police action during the protests, including detentions, internet restrictions and the use of facial recognition technology to identify protesters.

The court is further examining the decision to shift protests from Jantar Mantar to other locations in Delhi. It said the rules for giving permission to hold protests should clearly mention the time and conditions.
